The Role of Statins (HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors) on Insulin Secretion from the Islets of Langerhans: A Systematic Review

Context: Statins are administered to decrease atherosclerosis in patients with coronary heart disease. These drugs enhance the risk of diabetes by affecting islets insulin secretion. Objectives: Therefore, this systematic review investigates effect statins on secretion Langerhans related original studies. Methods: A preliminary search was performed PubMed, Scopus, Web Science, and ProQuest databases. The strategy terms were statin (hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA reductase inhibitors), secretion, Langerhans. elements evaluated using Mesh term system. Limits used include only articles no limits set language. quality method bias assessed its tool. Results: After removing irrelevant subject, 20 fulfilled inclusion criteria. In vivo studies revealed that pravastatin rosuvastatin increase while atorvastatin fluvastatin reduced variable, pitavastatin had effect. results vitro showed induced both increasing decreasing effects from pancreatic islet cells. Also, administration atorvastatin, rosuvastatin, fluvastatin, pitavastatin, simvastatin, lovastatin decreased medium. Conclusions: Pravastatin could other variable.
